Taking the Difficult out of Difference

EIDIDiversity brings a dynamic potential for creativity and energy. It also brings the possibility for discord when differences in values, background, language and approach clash. At times like these, the result can be miscommunication, conflict and diminished productivity. Emotional Intelligence is called for to channel the emotional energy that emerges order to deal with differences in a positive way. This session will share a model and tools for building the Emotional Intelligence necessary for being successful in working with the complexity and opportunity diversity brings. Participants will gain conceptual information and practical tools for effective communication across differences, and for building environments of collaboration and inclusion.

Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of the role of Emotional Intelligence in dealing with diversity

  • Gain a model of the four components of Emotional Intelligence and Diversity and their application for professional success

  • Assess selves in Emotional Intelligence and Diversity competencies

  • Gain insight about the values, beliefs and biases that guide your work

  • Learn methods to manage emotions triggered by differences

  • Gain knowledge about cultural differences and others’ values

  • Develop strategies for building inclusive, harmonious and productive relationships and work groups
