Who is EID in Education?
Jorge Cherbosque, Ph.D. is the co-director of the Staff and Faculty Counseling Center at UCLA. He also has an active private practice and is a partner in the Emotional Intelligence and Diversity Institute. In addition to his work as a counselor, he has been involved for many years in the field of organizational consultation and intercultural communication as a trainer and consultant.
Jorge has made presentations at numerous professional conferences and seminars and has conducted workshops on leadership, team building, multicultural/diversity management and emotional intelligence for may public sector and global organizations. In addition he is a marketing research consultant for Lincoln-Mercury, Ford Motor Company, AT&T and other Fortune 500 corporations. He is also the co-author of a four workbook series on Emotional Intelligence and Diversity and Emotional Intelligence for Managing Results in a Diverse World.
Sharon Dewees, retired Assistant Principal at Orville Wright Middle School in the Los Angeles Unified School District, has been an educator for 38 years. In her long career, she served as Teacher, Faculty Chair, Department Chair, Head Counselor, and Assistant Principal at a number of Middle and High Schools throughout the LAUSD, providing inspiring leadership and creating numerous innovative programs. She is the recipient of many awards for her exemplary leadership skills and devotion to students and their success, among them the PTA Golden Oak award and the Rotary Club Educator of the Year award.
Lee Gardenswartz, Ph.D. Is a former secondary teacher in LAUSD and former facilitator on a federally funded staff development project that helped the district deal with the challenges of mandatory integration from 1977-1980. She is currently partner in Gardenswartz & Rowe, a nationally known diversity consulting and training firm, providing services to clients across the country since 1980.
Lee is co-author of 10 books on the subject of diversity, among them Managing Diversity: A Complete Desk Reference and Planning Guide, Diverse Teams At Work, and the Diversity Tool Kit. She is a co-founder of the Emotional Intelligence and Diversity Institute and co-author of a four workbook series on Emotional Intelligence and Diversity and Emotional Intelligence for Managing Results in a Diverse World.
Joy Hawkins is an organization development consultant specializing in organization change, workforce diversity, management development, team effectiveness and conflict resolution. With over 25 years in organization consulting, training and human resources management, she combines in depth knowledge with practical experience in planning, designing, and facilitating change processes and working with organization systems. Prior
to starting her consulting practice in 1988, Joy held management and internal consulting positions with ARCO and Allstate Insurance Company.
Joy is also a former board member of the Los Angeles Organization Development Network, the Los Angeles Urban League, and is a faculty member of the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication in Portland, Oregon.
Laura Mitre has a distinguished career as an E.S.L. and Spanish Teacher at the prestigious Polytech Institute in Mexico City. She has extensive experience working with children and young adults with emotional and cognitive disadvantages. Laura has had a long-held interest and passion for Bio-Psychology, Teaching, Graphic Design and Computer Animation.
She has a Bachelor's Degree in Pedagogy, an Associate Degree in Art, Linguistics, World Geography and History from the Instituto International de Idiomas y Turismo in Mexico City, she also posess Psychology, Child Development and Teaching credentials, as well as Graphic Design, Web Design, Desktop Publishing and Networking Administration certifications.
Laura is fluent in Spanish, English and French and she also speaks Italian and Portuguese. Miss Mitre's business career began in 1983 at Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City. In 1985, she moved to the USA and began working for the LAUSD at various Elementary schools and the College Disctrict. A few years later, with the revolution of the Internet she founded a Web Design company. She is currently specializin in e-Learning and manages CaLaNet, a multimedia privately owned company.
Beth Ojena, a strong instructional leader with thirty-eight years experience as an educator in the Los Angeles Unified School District, served as Director of Instruction in Local District D, Principal, Assistant Principal, instructional and administrative advisors in various capacities within the LAUSD. Mrs. Ojena was Principal at Coeur d’Alene Elementary School in Venice, California, which served as a model program for educating homeless students from 1989-1999.
As Principal, Mrs. Ojena enjoyed building partnerships between the business/corporate world and the world of education. Creative Artist’s Agency, TBWA Chiat Day, Crossroads Private School for the Arts and Science, New Roads, PS Arts and numerous other private funders and foundations built the success of Coeur d’Alene School. Mrs. Ojena also served as Field Director Urban Learning Centers, a part of Urban Educational Partnership and as Administrative Coordinator for the full-Day Kindergarten Program for LAUSD.
